The communicative function of art

Fine art shapes not only the intellect, as the scholar does, nor only the heart, as the educator of people in the moral field does, but educates the whole man in his oneness. What it addresses is not the intellect, nor the heart, but the entire mind in the union of its faculties; it is a third thing obtained by adding both the previous ones. Perhaps one cannot express what it does better than by saying: it makes the transcendental point of view common. The philosopher elevates himself and others to this point of view with work and according to a rule: the spirit that looks at beauty finds itself there without thinking about it in a determined way; it does not know any other point of view and those who abandon themselves to its influence are unintentionally elevated to it in such a way that they do not become aware of this passage.
